Reading a certificate of analysis

A useful review starts with the link between the document and the material in front of you. Work through the identifiers, methods and reported results before drawing a conclusion.

At a glance
  • Match the material and batch.
  • Read results with their methods and limits.
  • Keep the original report with your record.

Match the document to the material

Start with the compound name, nominal format and supplier batch reference. Compare the container information with the product record and the original report. An unexplained mismatch is a question to resolve with the issuer.

Container label→Batch record→Original report

Keep the report identifier, date and issuing organization with that connection. A report for a different lot does not establish results for the lot you are reviewing.

Read the result in context

Look at what was tested, how it was tested and the criterion used to interpret the result. Review any limitations or missing information rather than relying on a headline percentage.

Review pointQuestion to answer
Material identityWhat evidence supports the named material?
Analytical resultWhich quantity or property was measured?
Method and scopeIs the method appropriate for the stated purpose?
Acceptance criterionWhat limit or specification was used?
Keep the claims separate.

A purity statement is not the same statement as a nominal amount, sterility claim or suitability for a particular use. Review the evidence supporting each relevant claim.

Resolve missing information

  • Ask the issuer to explain conflicting identifiers or units.
  • Request the complete report when only an extract is available.
  • Keep the question and the issuer’s response with the document record.

Available Monarch Lab source reports are linked in the COA library. Veelyon batch COAs are listed separately as Upcoming.

A practical review checklist

Use these prompts to organize your review. A checked box records your own progress; it does not certify a material.

About these guides.

Published by Veelyon Lab. These guides explain catalog formats, document review and record keeping. Background references are linked below so readers can review their scope.

Guide checklists record your review progress. They do not independently verify a compound, replace a batch-specific report or certify Veelyon inventory. Original source reports and Upcoming Veelyon COAs are identified separately in the source-report library.
